This had been a bedroom with two windows facing the side yard. The only way to reach this side yard was via the backyard. It had been a neglected and forgotten space. This room was seldom used, except by overnight guests.
We removed the hallway wall in the interior, and most of the exterior wall to open the room to the side yard. We installed double French doors on either side of the room, and hung lined linen drapes to allow privacy. Although it is a guest room with a sleeper sofa, we also are attracted to the light and location and find ourselves hanging out here.
Because we wanted to create a new route to the backyard, we had a brick porch and pergola built just outside the French doors. We installed a path of pea gravel and planted drought-resistant succulents in pots at various levels. Once we installed the fountain we knew that we had created our new favorite outdoor space.
