ABOUT SAN CARLOS

For such a small town, San Carlos packs a lot of punch into its six square miles. With a population of nearly thirty thousand, the suburb is situated between Redwood City and Belmont and is mapped out like a small town. Living in San Carlos means you’re both 25 minutes away from San Francisco and 25 minutes from San Jose. In part a result of its small-town energy and unique location (it’s part of the Northern end of Silicon Valley), San Carlos is known as the “City of Good Living.”

San Carlos real estate is perfect for families who are drawn to lower pace lifestyle.  And it has drawn some famous faces too. Comedian Dana Carvey, renowned director Kathryn Bigelow, and former major-leaguer Barry Bonds call San Carlos home. Houses for sale in San Carlos have a median home value of approximately $950k.

One region to look at is El Sereno Corte, a large region in the flat-lands near downtown San Carlos. (Its White Oaks neighborhood is well-known.) The city’s charming downtown boasts 112 businesses and a number of restaurants.

The city’s train station was built in the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style of architecture, the same utilized by the architect of Stanford, who some believe was actually behind the design of this station. Built in 1888, it’s still going; it’s now part of the Caltrain system.

If you’re looking for an innovative small town, look no further. The Sheriff’s Department recently launched a web site for residents that maps out criminal activity. And if you’re hoping to participate in a ride-along, the San Carlos Bureau of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s department offers ”virtual ride-alongs” tweeting live updates on their beat (@SMCSheriff). Fun fact: To save city funds, the police department was recently privatized.

San Carlos was the first city in the state to open a charter school and its educational system is highly acclaimed.

During the summer season, the city sponsors a series of Friday night concerts, and accepts applications from bands near and far on its web site. Other San Carlos attractions include the Hiller Aviation Museum, San Carlos Museum and the numerous hiking trails that run through and around the city.

The Art & Wine Faire comes around every October and celebrates its 22nd year in 2013. More than 275 hand-picked artists are on-hand for the Faire selling their wares (including ceramics, pottery, watercolor and photography). And there’s lots of food - everything from fried artichokes to BBQ Thai Chicken and funnel cakes. Wash all of it down with your favorite wine, champagne or microbrew as you enjoy one of the Peninsula’s most-loved fall festivals.
